Residents live in care suites which incorporate social space, a dining area and a kitchenette,... We spoke with 11 people who use the service and 12 relatives about their experience of the care provided. We spoke with 14 members of staff including the registered manager, compliance manager, deputy manager, clinical lead, nurses, care workers and supporting staff. We reviewed a range of records including 11 peoples’ care records and multiple medicine administration records. We looked at four staff files in relation to recruitment and supervision. A variety of records relating to the management of the service, such as audits, meetings, monitoring activity and training were reviewed.
This enables Cornford House to be a “home for life” for most residents. Our Social Co-ordinators compile residents’ “Life Stories” by obtaining information from family, long standing friends, old work colleagues, etc. and assembling it into portfolios. These help to bring back old memories and form the basis of discussions to aid reminiscences.

It provides full nursing care under the supervision of Registered Nurses. The home is keen to respect residents’ privacy, rights, independence and freedom of choice as far as possible, taking into account their individual ability levels. It operates an “open door” policy whereby relatives and friends are welcome to visit at any time. Residents may choose to spend time in the privacy of their own room or in the lounges. The home provides accommodation for residents with nursing care needs and it offers a choice of either studio or one bedroom care suites, or nursing home bedrooms.

We are keen to ensure that each resident is at the heart of a mutually beneficial relationship between their family and friends, our staff and healthcare professionals. Cornford House provides accommodation along with nursing and personal care for up to 70 people. The service provides personal and nursing care and has a dementia unit that can accommodate up to 18 people. The inspection was prompted in part by notification of an incident, following which a person using the service died. This incident is subject to further investigation by the Care Quality Commission as to whether any regulatory action should be taken.

Activities Are So Important The home has three Social Co-ordinators who co-ordinate an active programme of crafts, games and hobbies, as well as regular events, social activities and excursions. Group activities are more popular in the main lounge to include weekly musical entertainment and a craft group. Some recent activities include a cooking session, a quiz and an exercise group. An annual visit to a farm to see the new born lambs is always very popular. Take into account the needs and wishes of residents, and plan a variety of leisure and social activities.
District nurses provide us with support and advice as required for specialist wound care and palliative care. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and rehabilitation therapy are all available following a referral from the GP. We ensure that all residents attend booked hospital appointments and we arrange for them to be accompanied by a carer. Hazeldene House in Pembury, near Tunbridge Wells, is a purpose built supported living scheme for older people with nursing needs.
Seven Springs - Care Home Physical Disabilities
Cornford House has recently been completely re-built offering larger than average rooms all with ensuite facilities and extensive communal lounges and dining rooms. The home offers 76 places to include nursing care for frail elderley residents and a unit for residents with dementia type illnesses. Cornford House is a recently built home in extensive and peaceful grounds on the outskirts of Pembury Village, near Tunbridge Wells. It provides accommodation for residents with nursing care needs and it offers a choice of either studio or one bedroom care suites. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing and/or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement dependent on their registration with us. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection.

Please see the action we have told the provider to take at the end of this report. At this inspection the service has been rated requires improvement and there were breaches of regulations in relation to person centred care and consent. People had comprehensive risk assessments in place that contained enough information for staff to support people safely.
We will work alongside the provider and local authority to monitor progress. We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service, which will help inform when we next inspect. People were not always offered choice in the care and support process. Tenancy agreements placed restrictions on people, for example, they were not able to have cooking facilities in their home. It provides personal care to people living in their own rooms under a tenancy agreement within Cornford House.
Staff respect personal rights and privacy and will respond to individual needs. The home has an occupational therapist and an activities organizer who provide a thriving and stimulating programme. We are mindful of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our regulatory function. We will continue to monitor the service and will take further action if needed. Medicines were managed safely, and people received them as prescribed. People were supported to eat and drink enough and told us the food was good in Cornford House. At the time of our inspection there was a registered manager in post.
People receiving personal care can choose to have their care provided by another care provider. However, everyone living in Cornford House had their care provided by staff employed by Cornford House. This included things the provider needs to tell us about, for example, serious injuries or safeguarding concerns. We sought feedback from professionals who work with the service and Healthwatch. Healthwatch is an independent consumer champion that gathers and represents the views of the public about health and social care services in England. We used the information the provider sent us in the provider information return .
The home accommodates both physically frail older people and also older people with dementia type illnesses, with each group living in separate areas within the building.
